Artificial Intelligence has come into the center of media attention with the release of ChatGPT. However, AI has been consistently advancing, prompting extensive exploration of various societal concerns surrounding the utilization of artificial intelligence for several decades. As an illustration, it is worth noting that Alan Turing devised his now-famous imitation game as early as 1950. The current hype around AI can therefore also be seen as the sudden collective recognition of a phenomenon whose potential we now perceive and whose risks we sense, but most importantly, whose development we ought to shape.

Given this context, it becomes crucial for a technical university to extend its focus beyond algorithms and programming and place a special emphasis on addressing broader societal, ethical, and humanistic questions. This TUesday Talk intends to explore a diverse range of topics, including the nature of intelligence, promoting responsible engagement with artificial intelligent systems, and crafting educational initiatives to foster proficiency in the realm of AI.

It will feature discussions on these subjects by scientists:

  • Thomas Bugnyar, Department of Cognitive Biology, University of Vienna
  • Julia Neidhardt, CAIML & Institute of Information Systems Engineering, TU Wien
  • Riccardo Villa, Architecture Theory and Philosophy of Technics, TU Wien
  • Zsófia Virányi, Messerli Research Institute, University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna

together with the following members of the TU Vision Team:

The language used for the discussion will be English, but attendees are welcome to ask questions in German.

The event will take place at 5:30 pm in Kontaktraum, Gußhausstraße 25-29, 1040 Vienna (6th floor). The lounge will open 30 minutes prior for snacks and beverages.

We look forward to a fruitful exchange of ideas!
